In this project we have been tasked to create and map textures to 3d objects using a combination of different software. Due to the short nature of this project I began some research immediately.
I decided to look at sucuk und bratwurst a creative studio from Berlin. They primarily focus on 3D work as well as graphic design. They have been a big inspiration to my in my work with design as well as 3d in the past.
Also looked at various lighting and installation works by James Turrell. The vibrancy and purity of his lighting work really interests me.
Music video by Ecco2k makes heavy use of lighting and projectors in combination with overexposure in the camera to give the light an almost overwhelming feeling.
My old work did an event for LGBT youth screening alice in wonderland onto the castle for those entering
While working on research etc. I was watching the behind the scenes of the Mandalorian on Disney+, in episode 4 of the behind the scenes series they talk about the technology they put into the show. Due to the budget and timeframe of filming of the show, they created “The Volume”. A “room” of TV screens 75 ft in diameter. All the sets on screen are photographs that have been rendered in a game engine and displayed on these screens. The real time nature of these sets and screens allowed for much easier production of the show.
After this I started experimenting with what I could use as a texture. I experimented using different fonts as well as shape and colour.
I experimented using more stylised fonts and larger thicker fonts as well as soft brush circles to try and create a sense of depth.
I decided to stick with the same phrase “never ending change” from my last project as I feel like this could also be successfully portrayed in this 3d environment.
This animation is intended to loop around the object I apply it to.
The shaping of the object represents a rock. The natural shape of the rock is contrasted with the bright lights, the synthetic nature of it. I felt that the rock fits well with the phrase chosen as natural formations especially those in stone are constantly changing due to things like erosion wither that be from nature or from human causation. I created a new shape of rock for each object in order to showcase this constant changing.
For the the object on the right I accidentally exported the animation as a PNG without a background, this made the object transparent but it still reflected the light and animated well, this is something I wish to look into further.
I experimented with Arnold lighting and using HDRI maps to take advantage of the reflections that this produced. This was interesting to me as it would be hard to produce this in real life. I decided to include this in my final experiments due to the way the light flows around the object. This is almost akin to a projector being shined on a reflective object.
I used black in order to flatten out the shape of the “rock” but the animated next shows its deformities.
With this I chose to experiment with adding sections of colour and how that interacts with the UV map, as well as how still text interacts with the deformations of the rock. Looking at the way it bunches up and stretches out due to the shaping of the rock.
I decided to incorporate some coding into the project I generated this sketch in order to use the lines to emphasise the shape it has been applied on. The animation also fits with the never ending change theme as it is a randomised series of patterns.
This is the combination of my objects with the animation visible, given more time with this project I would perhaps animate the actual shapes to again hammer home the never ending change theme as well as generate a more broad range of experiments. I enjoyed this project and experimenting with modelling etc. I feel like doing this project as it was intended would be great fun experimenting with lighting in real life.
